SAM AND LADY DELIVER IN MCCALMONT CUP

SAM AND LADY DELIVER IN MCCALMONT CUP

Ian Fortune

Mustang Sam and Coolanga Lady will take their place in the final of the Ballymac Anton @ Stud McCalmont Cup on the back of a semi-final victory after both displayed great determination at Kilkenny on Friday night.

Michael Lowry’s Coolanga Lady went fastest when coming from lengths behind the pace-setter Zoom in the second heat. The daughter of Droopys Sydney and Princey Beag was ideally housed on the fence and he made full use of the draw to enter the back straight in second.

Zoom set a strong gallop after scorching to the turn and looked a very likely scorer but Coolanga Lady is strong an she began to reel in the leader around the last two bends. Storming up the straight, Coolanga Lady got to Zoom and went on to cross the line with three parts of a length in hand in 29.09. Zoom just held on for second with his kennel mate Lujaneo also finishing fast to finish just a short head behind him.

SAM SHOWS HIS DETERMINATION

Mustang Sam set the standard in the second round of the competition and did plenty right to win the opening heat.

Coming away racing, Sean Bourke’s son of Droopys Jet and Mustang Kay Cee held a narrow lead into the turn.

Importantly, Warrenstown Boy also went up fast on the fence and this complicated the issue. Mustang Sam just failed to clear his rival and the pair rubbed shoulders from the second turn to halfway. As they approached the third turn, Mustang Sam started to get on top and he finally shook of his rival before drawing on to score by two and a half lengths in 29.30. Flaminmoneybags came through for second while Foyle Amy was just a neck further back in third.
