Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ) can confirm that a serious welfare incident involving greyhounds occurred at a registered premises in County Roscommon in late April.
Following a number of welfare inspections, concerns escalated in late April, prompting immediate intervention by RCÉ officers and veterinary professionals.
In line with the Welfare of Greyhounds Act 2011, RCÉ issued a Welfare Notice to the owner of the registered premises, prohibiting the keeping of greyhounds and to remove any further threat or risk to the health or welfare of greyhounds.
RCÉ continues to engage with the relevant authorities, including An Garda Síochána, in relation to the incident.
As the matter is currently under investigation and involves a deeply sensitive personal situation, no further comment is being provided at this time.
Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ) carries out approximately 2,500 welfare checks on greyhound premises each year. Most checks are routine, but a number are targeted based on information provided via RCÉ’s 24/7 confidential phone line (061 448100) for members of the public who may have information on the mistreatment of greyhounds. All reports of alleged mistreatment are investigated by a designated Welfare Officer of GRI.
