The Irish greyhound community lost a good one during the week with the passing of Mick Kelly.
A greyhound man to his core, he had many, many friends through his pursuits on the track and up the field, but is best remembered as owner of 2004 Derby champion Like A Shot.
Indeed, it was the proudest moment of his career in the sport and set off celebrations that will be remembered many years from now. A hugely popular figure in his native Kilkenny, it seemed as though half the county was on the presentation area on that faithful night in September 2004.
Joined by his great friend and breeder of Like A Shot, Pat Sinnott and handler Owen McKenna, it was a special night for all involved but Mick was floating on air. It is a wonderful way to remember a man who will be missed by so many.
We would like to send on our sincerest condolences to his family, to his son Finbarr, beloved grandchildren Fiona, Orla, Muireann, Ailbhe and Paddy, daughter-in-law Miriam, son-in-law Seán, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
May He Rest In Peace.
