JIM McCANN

JIM McCANN

It’s with real sadness we must report the passing of one of the great characters and bookmakers in Irish greyhound racing, Jim McCann.

Those that frequented Shelbourne Park and Harold’s Cross would have known Jim, who had a pitch in both tracks from 1963.

A great lover of greyhound racing, particularly hurdlers, he owned many superb dogs over the years including a few Grand National finalists. In fact, in one calendar year he once stated he had over thirty winners over timber.

As a bookmaker, he certainly wasn’t afraid to lock horns with the punters. Always the first bookmaker to price a race at Harold’s Cross and Shelbourne Park, he was not afraid to voice his displeasure if caught out. But those that frequented both tracks loved him for it.

Truly one of the great characters of the sport, he will be fondly remembered by so many. He had a tremendous innings, passing on at the ripe age of 93.

We would like to take this opportunity to send on our sincerest condolences to his sisters Mary and Sr. Christina, his brothers Joe, John Pat and Oliver, his in-laws, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

May he Rest In Peace.
