HUGE CROWDS AT ENNISCORTHY TO WITNESS POWDER TRIUMPH

Ian Fortune

Those on Facebook this morning couldn’t help but stumble across the wonderful pictures and videos from Enniscorthy track on Thursday evening as a huge crowd poured through the stiles of the famous stadium for a brilliant night of racing and fundraising.

As we stated a couple of times over recent days, the Relay For Life meeting was run in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. As part of the #LIghtforLisa campaign, Powder Freeman took on a greyhound in a man v dog challenge and the handicapper certainly did a fine job in ensuring that Power emerged triumphant.

In fairness to Powder, he did resemble Michael Johnson in his prime, only short of wearing the golden spikes, but he covered the ground like a top-class sprinter eventually emerging a facile scorer.

Rains Annamay, who happens to be owned by Powder’s father Noel and his nephew Ben (Pic: below), did all she could to bridge the gap but the massive cheers from the crowd clearly pushed her rival on. In fact, Powder had enough time to turn around and wave to his adoring fans.

It really was heartwarming to see such a huge turnout at the south eastern venue for a wonderful night and fundraising campaign and great credit must go to all involved in the organizing committee and those that made it possible.

And to Powder and his young family, it would have been a bitter sweet night but they did a wonderful job in honouring the memory of his late wife Lisa for who the #LightforLisa campaign is named after.

QUALITY RACING IN APRIL STAKES

Of the canine action on the night, most attention was on the semi-finals of the valuable April Stakes.

Both heats were won in trap to line fashion with Kiltrea Bob going fastest for John Doyle. The son of Pestana and Kiltrea Dawn got loose in the opening yard and was always in charge as he emerged a two and a half length winner over Whitewood Moyne in 28.96.

The opening heat saw Laura Earle’s Whitewood Lenny win in identical fashion. A son of Pestana and Whitewood Global, Whitewood Lenny held off Cushie Paidi to win by a half length in 29.15.
