GREYHOUND RACING IRELAND REVIEW OF THE  ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, FIROCOXIB

Greyhound Racing Ireland wishes to inform the public that from April 1st 2022, a revised screening limit will take effect in relation to the medicine Firocoxib (Previcox).

Firocoxib is widely prescribed in the form of ‘Previcox’ and is a potent anti-inflammatory. Following on from recent studies and after careful consideration, GRI have taken the decision to reduce the screening limits for this medicine to 2ng/ml for plasma (blood) and 2ng/ml for urine in line with published international scientific research.

The resultant levels will mean that a withdrawal period of at least 8 days should be observed with this drug in advance of competition. This is the length of time that is required for the levels of firocoxib to return below 2ng/ml in Plasma and 2ng/ml in urine, after the administration of this medicine.

Greyhound Racing Ireland is committed to the maintaining the highest levels of integrity within the sport. Ongoing review of limits like these, in line with published scientific data is an integral part of maintaining that commitment.
