Friday 20th February marked a significant milestone for biodiversity at Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium, as 770 native Irish trees were planted in a collaborative community initiative.

The trees were supplied by Trees on the Land, a registered charity operating since 2013 under the Green Economy Foundation. Since its inception, the charity has coordinated the planting of over three million native trees across thousands of sites throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland, supporting communities, landowners and organisations in restoring biodiversity.
The planting day was proudly sponsored by STS Group Cork, whose team joined members of the Friends of Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium to help establish a diverse mix of native Irish species across the site.

Despite experiencing “four seasons in one day,” spirits remained high throughout the event, which combined environmental action with education and community engagement.

The day was led by Brian Gaynor, landscape architect working as project manager with Trees on the Land, who provided expert guidance and shared valuable insights into the ecological importance of the species planted. The native trees included:
These species were carefully selected to enhance biodiversity, support pollinators and birdlife, strengthen natural habitats, and contribute to long-term environmental resilience at Curraheen Park.

The initiative forms part of Greyhound Racing Ireland’s broader sustainability and biodiversity commitments, reinforcing the organisation’s focus on environmental stewardship, community collaboration, and climate action.
