JET FASTEST AT DERBY TRIAL SESSION

Mustang Jet, Ballinabola Ed and Bobsleigh Dream were the eye-catchers at the Derby trial session at Shelbourne Park on Saturday morning.
On what was a glorious morning in Ringsend, Mustang Jet went fastest as he spun around in 29.57 for 550yds.
Dolores Ruth was understandably very happy with her charge and its now full steam ahead for a Boylesports Derby challenge. He was fastest of all the dogs to trial over 550yds to the line, the third bend and at the finish, recording 3.47, 17.09 and 29.57.
ED MOVES WELL
Not far behind him was Ballinabola Ed. Pat Buckley suggested his star performer would need the run but he was satisfied with his trial.
The one-time English Derby favourite and joint favourite with sponsors Boylesports for Irish Derby glory recorded 29.61 of the back of a 3.49 and 17.18 sectionals.
Bobsleigh Dream is clearly in fine form at present. After capturing the Tipperary Cup last weekend, she recorded 29.69 to go third fastest. What was most notable from her display was the power she displayed in the second half of the trial. She posted 3.57 and 17.42 but came home faster than any other greyhound to trial over 550yds, recording 12.27 from the third turn to the line.
AN ISSUE WITH THE 525YD TRAPS
There seemed to be an issue with the 525yd traps or the timing mechanism as experienced trackers The Other Kobe, Scooby Prince and Skywalker Barry all recorded very slow first line sectionals.
This was reflected in their trial times and it’s perhaps best to take 25 spots or so off their end clock.
The exciting youngster Clona Rebel was actually fastest of those to trial over 525yds, recording 28.59 but a 2.38 opening split would back up the train of thought that something was amiss with the clock. As a result of the issues with the 525yds boxes, the majority of the trials were over 550yds, although there were a few sprint trials.
EDISON PLEASES IN HAND SLIP
Droopys Edison was given a hand slip over 525yds and moved with fluency.
It’s difficult to estimate how fast he went but using all the evidence available I would suggest he recorded around 28.60. Robert Gleeson suggested he was still a little over his racing weight and was certain his impressive tracker would improve for the spin.
KILDARE GOES QUICK
The undoubted star of those to have a spin over two bends was Kildare.
The English Derby runner-up flew around in 18.53, suggesting he is ready for a big Derby campaign. Peter Cronin was certainly content with the run and is looking forward to another Derby campaign with his star. He also suggested this would be one of the toughest renewals of the Derby in recent years. It’s hard to disagree.
