STAN STANDS OUT AT LIMERICK

Peter Farrell

There may not have been any sweepstake action on offer at Limerick Greyhound Stadium on Saturday night, however, there were some performances of real quality with Southwood Sam going quickest over the standard trip.

A May 22’ whelp, Southwood Stan was a recent runner at the Limerick sales where he clocked 28.99 on that occasion and he has proved an astute buy from Jonathan O’Grady as he produced a career best effort in his A2 event. 3/1 at the off, the son of Droopys Sydney and Southwood Queen bolted from trap six and he quickly moved across the track to control the inside line. Taking charge down the back, the powerful black built up a healthy advantage at this point and he proved a class above some decent rivals to cross the line five lengths clear of Portdrine Magic in second. The time was a rapid 28.59.

Prior to that, there was a fine performance from Roscomroe Rusty as he justified his even money price tag for Betty Higgins. Now into his third year, ‘Rusty’ bounced back to winning ways at Thurles last time out when clocking a fast 29.09 .20s and he carried that form to Limerick last night to make every post a winner. A son of Droopys Biker and Rosmult Bliss, the black broke expertly from trap five and he swept the opening corner to lead from Gulleen Ina in second. Maintaining a two length advantage throughout, ‘Rusty’ stopped the clock in a brisk 28.70.

ROCHE DOUBLE

Lucy Roche recently took out her own trainer’s license and she has been on fire since, recording another double last night at the Munster venue.

The first of her representatives to score was Hazelhill Holly in race five. Owned by Michael O’Connell, the daughter of Dromana Bucko and Flat White was headed in the early exchanges by Abigails Barry and was forced to play second fiddle for three parts of the contest. However, ‘Holly’ showed the superior stamina in the closing stages of the event and she quickly put two lengths between herself and ‘Barry’ close home. The time was 29.02.

The double for Lucy Roche was secured in race seven, which was the TIME Greyhound Nutrition A5/A6 525, by Extra Enjoyment. 5/2 at the off, the pocket-sized daughter of Malachi and Glowing Exile sat third early on as Straight Mac led the way, however, displayed fine dash down the back to improve into second. Nip and tuck on the run for home, the judge was called into action but it was Extra Enjoyment who got the vote, by a short-head, on the line. The time was 29.28.
