The final of the €1,000 to the winner Sean Byrne Painting & Decorating A1/A2 525 was the highlight of last night’s Thurles card and it was Firminos Ruby who made it back-to-back wins in the stake to land the spoils.
In what looked a wide-open contest on paper, the betting reflected the outlook of the contest as both Firminos Ruby and Knockalton Conor were installed the joint 2/1 favourites to land the spoils. However, an upset looked on the cards early as Puck Out showed his customary early gears from trap six to lead around the opening corner. Taking a healthy advantage into the back straight, it was Private Jet who emerged as the main threat and he stormed alongside Puck Out approaching the penultimate turn. At this point however, Puck Out drifted wide at the third which allowed the improving Friminos Ruby up the inside and she was to prove too strong in the closing stages. The winning line now in sight, Firminos Ruby, a daughter of Ballymac Bigmike and Derrylahan Penny, stayed on best of all to cross the line a half a length better off than Private Jet in second. The time was 29.40 .20s.
SONIA SETS THE TONE IN ERRILL STAKE
Elsewhere on the card there were two semi finals of the Errill Schooling Track A3/A4 525 down for decision and it was Dysert Sonia who followed up on her opening round win with another smooth performance.
Jointly owned by TJ Connolly and Maria Byrne, Dysert Sonia went to traps the 2/1 second favourite but she was forced to play second fiddle to Faithful Rory in the early exchanges. However, sticking close to her rivals into the back straight, the daughter of Droopys Roddick and Dysert Noir went between runners like a knife through butter and from here, she stretched clear around the bottom two bends. Very impressive in the closing stages, Dysert Sonia got stronger as the race progressed and she crossed the line with over five lengths in hand over Courty Girl in second. The time was a smart 29.02 .20s.
ABIGAIL POWERS HOME
In the second semi final, Abigails Power got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory for connections.
Owned by Abigail Morrissey, Abigails Power came into the race a 2/1 shot and despite not coming well too fluently from one, he used his rails pitch expertly to follow Cabra Sonic into the back straight. At this point however, the son of Belles Direction and Geelo Lu Lu showed big back straight pace to pin back the leader and he took control entering the penultimate turn. Some trouble in behind allowed Errill Daithi to follow through in second, but it was all about Abigails Power as he crossed the line three lengths clear of his kennel compatriot in second. The time was 29.24 .20s.
