CABRA AVA PROVES A CLASS ABOVE AT THURLES

CABRA AVA PROVES A CLASS ABOVE AT THURLES

Peter Farrell

It was an all-graded affair at Thurles Park last night as they hosted a twelve race card and not for the first time it was the Cabra greyhounds who stole the show for owner Ava Scally.

Both Cabra Dawn and Cabra Ava landed their respective contests but there was little doubt who was the star of proceedings as Cabra Ava blew holes in the Talking Dogs Open/A1 525 to win in style. A recent Oaks challenger at Shelbourne Park, Cabra Ava was of course the winner of last year’s Champion Bitch stake at Thurles and she has maintained an excellent standard ever since. Bulleting from trap three last night, the daughter of Kinloch Brae – Cabra Smokey posted a 1.70 early sectional as she took a commanding lead into the opening corner. From here, it would prove a routine success for this talented bitch and she maintained a ferocious gallop throughout to come home a comfortable, four and a half length winner, over Tarsna Dettori in second. The time was a red-hot estimate of 28.51.

DAWN KICK-STARTS DOUBLE

Prior to that, Cabra Dawn (Over Limit – Cabra Millie) made it two wins from her last three starts at the Tipperary circuit as she landed a 570-yard contest. Also owned by Ava Scally, Cabra Dawn is a very consistent sort and she was bidding to record a seventh career win when donning the white jacket last night. However, she was only moderately into stride as Whizzing Katie led early on from trap one and the latter took the field into the back straight. Making swift progress throughout, Cabra Dawn was now motoring in behind and she took up the running at the penultimate bend before finishing at speed to record another smart win. Three lengths better off than Whizzing Katie crossing the line, the time was 31.46.

TARSNA SODA CATCHES THE EYE

Elsewhere on the card, race four saw a hugely impressive performance put in by the Geoff Parnaby owned Tarsna Soda.

Still searching for his first career win in what was his third start, this A5 contest was over at the lift of the lids as Tarsna Soda, an August 19’ whelp, came away racing from trap five. Opening up a healthy advantage approaching the opener, it was clear that this greyhound was a class above his rivals and he duly maintained a strong gallop thereafter. Drawing clear with every stride, the son of Skywalker Rory – Dunclone Cannon continued his domination of the contest and he crossed the line with eleven lengths to spare in a fast estimated clock of 28.81.

IN OTHER RACES

Another greyhound to get off the mark was Clondoty Bonnar in race two for owner Sean Leahy. A 330-yard contest, Clondoty Bonnar was quickly into stride wearing the striped jacket and he showed a good turn of early speed to take control. Staying on well thereafter, the son of Laughil Blake – Clondoty Nancy had two lengths to spare over Hack Up Deise in a time of 18.16.

Nowursinging tasted defeat for the first time last time out but David Flanagan’s charge got back to winning ways in race six. Quickest into stride from trap one, the son of Ballymac Best – Steely Destiny maintained a good gallop throughout and he kept on well to secure a two length victory over Ballyphilip Sky in second. The time was a fast 29.12.

Micks Energy (Tarsna Havana – Send The Answer) caught the eye last time out over the sprint distance at Thurles and James O’Connor’s charge made it back to back wins in race eight. Well away from trap five, Micks Energy displayed good early dash to lead into the opening corner. Followed in second by Amazing Music, it was to make for an exciting finish but despite the best efforts of the latter, Micks Energy stuck out his head to secure victory. The time was a slick 17.93.

The final race of the session was landed in convincing fashion by the John Sparrow owned Ballyphilip Blue. Without a win since December of last year, this daughter of Skywalker Farloe – Ballyphilip Ace came away running from trap four to dispute the early lead with Heavens Eve. It was as you were for much of the contest thereafter but approaching the penultimate turn, Ballyphilip Blue began to turn the screw. From here, Sparrow’s charge stayed on well to claim a three length win over the gallant Heavens Eve in second. The time was a good calculated 29.01.
