With the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial scheduled to start next Saturday night at Limerick greyhound stadium, an unusually low key affair at the Dock Road venue caught fire last night as Bombardier landed the feature A1 race.
Hailing from the in-form kennel of Pat Buckley, Bombardier was a real eye-catcher in the Juvenile Classic at Tralee but has hit the post in a number of subsequent starts since. However, dropping back to A1 company last night, the hugely fast son of Ballymac Matt - Ballymac Efirgie showed why he will be a force in the coming weeks as he stormed home to land the spoils. It was Adamant Best who showed the best of the early pace as he breezed past Bombardier in the opening yards to hit the front from trap one. Setting a strong gallop in front, Adamant Best still held the initiative rounding the penultimate corner but between the bottom two bends, the chasing pack were making rapid inroads into the leader. Now firmly in top gear, Bombardier held a rails pitch and he took off in the closing fifty yards to cross the line three lengths clear of another fast finisher, Rackethall Leo, in second. The time was a very smart 28.58 and one would imagine that given the strong running abilities of Javier Jarne’s greyhound, he will be difficult to keep out of the qualification spots throughout the upcoming Kirby.
MALLOGS STORMS TO VICTORY
There was another flashy display in race nine which was the Talking Dogs A2 525 as Mallogs Stormzy ran out a comprehensive winner.
Owned by Sean Drohan, Mallogs Stormzy had some decent Shelbourne Park form prior to last night but he was only moderately away from trap five as Tallyho Hope led early. However, early traffic played into the hands of Mallogs Stormzy and he showed good determination to take advantage and go clear down the back straight. Staying on well thereafter, the son of Droopys Roddick - Emers Poppy crossed the line four lengths clear of nearest rival, Reckless Lee, in second. The time was a swift 28.74. Another who will no doubt be in the hat on Tuesday.
LILLY LEAVES IT LATE
After an impressive qualifying campaign, Coolavanny Lilly bounced back from debut defeat to land race eleven for owner Noel Hehir.
It was Nitro Anto who showed big early pace from trap five to lead the field early on as Coolavanny Lilly was forced to nestle in behind and bide her time from trap three. However, showing terrific back straight gears, the daughter of Scolari Me Daddy - Noelles Swiftco looked a massive threat entering the home straight despite Nitro Anto still holding the lead. Steering an inside line, Coolavanny Lilly wasn't to be denied late on and the flying finisher got up in the shadows of the post to claim a neck victory. The time was a smart 28.74.
BOBBY GETS THE WIN
Gary and Donal Cooney were amongst the winners in race ten as Boyneside Bobby (Taylors Sky - Badminton Rua) finished at speed to return to winning ways.
Quickly into stride from trap four, Boyneside Bobby was outpaced in the early yards as Nitro Hero showed all of his early zip to lead the field from trap two. Setting a strong pace in front, Nitro Hero continued to hold a two length lead entering the bottom two corners. However, Boyneside Bobby loomed large entering the home straight and he stormed to the front in the closing stages to cross the line a length clear of Appreciate It in second. The time was a swift 28.86 and keep an eye out for the Brendan Matthews owned Appreciate It in the weeks to come as he showed huge pace to take the runners-up spot.
There was a very likeable performance in race five which was the ‘Con & Annie Kirby Draw @ 11am Tuesday 525’ as Diegos Misty bounced back from debut defeat in Thurles to score in style.
Owned by Kurn Rushen and trained by John Byrne, Diegos Misty broke well from trap five to follow the early leader Rockspring Sally into the opening corner. Only an October 19’ whelp, Diegos Misty was on the shoulder of the leader rounding the opening bend but soon swept to the front entering the back straight to take control of the race. Stretching her lead thereafter, the daughter of Droopys Jet - Sidarian Fern ran out a comfortable winner in the end as she crossed the line four and a half lengths clear of Ironically Sammy in second. The time was a fast 28.99.
