Irish greyhound racing, and Dublin greyhound racing in particular, lost one of its greatest friends over the weekend with the sad passing of Mick O’Reilly.
For a number of decades, Mick was a fixture at both Harold’s Cross and Shelbourne Park.
Indeed, those that frequented either track wouldn’t just have known Mick but indeed knew his seat and his routine. Over many years, Mick handled hundreds of greyhounds and while he didn’t train any champions, he did manage to send out an Oaks runner-up in 2004.
Page Three Girl produced a series of tremendous performances through the classic to qualify for the final and, while she was a massive price to win, she ran an incredible race in defeat to chase home the winner Legal Moment.
The closure of Harold’s Cross came as a real blow to Mick but he made a new home at Shelbourne Park and he and his partner May scarcely missed a meeting. A great character with a gentle demeanor, Mick was always the best of company and his absence will be very obvious to those that frequent Shelbourne Park.
We send our sincerest condolences to his partner May, his children Chantal, Fidelma and Michael, his extended family and many friends both in and out of the sport.
May He Rest In Peace.
