It was confirmed yesterday that an 850yd contest has been added to the billing for the GRI Winter Racing Festival after interest had been expressed from both owners and trainers.

The addition of the staying contest to the card means that there will be a €2,500 to the winner race over every distance, with the exception of the 1025yd trip, on the second night of the festival.

It also means that the Veteran’s Open 525 is to be moved forward to the Friday and will now be one of the main races on the opening night of the festival. Of course, a week after the festival, the Shelbourne Open 1025 Marathon gets underway and it seems inevitable that many of those that take in the 850yd race will be back in action in the valuable competition.

Of course, opportunities for marathon greyhounds have become more limited in recent years so it’s wonderful to see them getting a chance to shine. Perhaps, in the coming year, we may see more races over more testing distances, including a few more eight bend races.
