LIZZY MAHER

Irish greyhound racing lost one of the truly great names in the sport over the weekend with the sad passing of Lizzy Maher at a great age.

Known to so many as the ‘Minnies’ lady, she was one of the most influential and successful breeders of modern times.

To this day her influence is still visible with numerous classic winners over the past few years tracing back to her breeding lines. These included Irish Sprint Cup winner and one of the fastest greyhounds of recent years, Carrick Aldo.

But she will be best remembered for breeding Tina Marina and Spiral Nikita. The litter comrades finished first and third in the 1996 Derby, while both would establish themselves as superstars after their racing careers were over.

Indeed, Tina Marina threw many stars including dual Oaks winner Marinas Tina, while Spiral Nikita would sire Derby winner Bypass Byway and numerous other classic winners including the great Late Late Show. To this day, the ‘Minnies’ line remains one of the strongest and most sought after in the sport.

Lizzie leaves an incredible legacy but those that knew her she was also a real lady and great company. She will be missed by so many in the sport and we would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to her daughter Ann, sons Martin and Dermot, grandchildren Ciarán, Diarmuid, Enya, Fionn, Aoibheann and Sean, son-in-law Richie, daughter-in-law Norah, sister Joan, nephews, nieces, her extended family and her many friends. May She Rest In Peace
