It’s the biggest week of the year in Irish greyhound racing as the Boylesports Derby draws to a conclusion and that is enough of a reason to celebrate, but IGB board member Wayne McCarthy has further reason to let his hair down as he turns the big 4-0.
It seems a lifetime ago since Wayne, who has been into the dogs all his life, first shot to prominence as a fresh faced, blonde locked free-taking extraordinaire on the senior football scene, making his first appearances for his beloved Dubs in the Tommy Carr era.
The blonde locks may be fading, he’s certainly not eleven and a half stone anymore and his ability to stick the ball over the bar from fifty yards out is probably gone, but the exiled Dub remains a greyhound racing fanatic from his Meath base. We’re not sure what form the celebrations will take but have no doubt he’ll give it 100% just like his footballing days. Happy birthday stretch!
