DUAL AND TRI-DISTANCE EVENTS THE FEATURE AT HQ

Ian Fortune

The semi-finals of two sweepstakes are the highlight of tonight’s action at Shelbourne Park. Twelve will become six in the This Runs Deep A3/A4 Tri-distance with each of the semi-finals set to be run over the 575yd trip.

TRICKS TO FOLLOW UP

Old Tricks set the standard last week when coming home clear in 30.18 for the 550yd trip. The extra yards shouldn’t be an issue, while the long run to the turn will certainly suit. He is selected to make all at the expense of Hello Sonny and Mantlehill.

ALDO JUST GETS NOD

The second heat looks more open. Blackstone Aldo gets the nod after coming home well to win last week. He will relish the extra yards and can again reel in Tracker Jack.

JAMES TO IMPRESS IN DUAL DISTANCE SEMIS

Harlequin James, Dapper Rupert and Robbies Galaxy are selected to lead home their rivals in the three semi-finals of the Talking Dogs A0/A1 Dual Distance.

Harlequin James displayed real promise in the opening round of the Newbridge Derby and can make full use of the long run to the turn in the opening heat. If the Scott Phelan trained star manages to get loose, he could take some stopping. Pot Of Gold can emerge as the main threat.

Dapper Rupert is clearly promising and looks the part in Heat 2 if avoiding mistakes. A winner in 28.79 on debut at Shelbourne, he has since won over 620yds around Dundalk. With superb pace from start to finish, the 575yd trip should be ideal for Sam McQuade’s charge. He does need to be at his sharpest, however, as this is a very good contest. Ballyhooly Tejay, Gortkelly Bear, Peters Sydney and Velvet Jenny are all respected but the fact that Dapper Rupert is open to much improvement tips the nod in his direction.

The final heat is also very competitive. Robbies Galaxy has a couple of good lines of form around Drumbo Park and is expected to improve. That is just enough to gain him the vote. Of his rivals, Dapper Zara is clearly a big danger. She made a superb debut at Shelbourne late last year but is lightly raced in 2024.
