CESAREWITCH WINS FOR ALICE AND ZINZAN

Ian Fortune

The stage is set for a tremendous finish to the Cesarewitch next weekend after two wonderful semi-finals at Mullingar on Saturday night.

Amazing Alice and Monbeg Zinzan will take their place in the decider on the back of a victory, although it was Michael Corr that really deserved the headlines as he will be responsible for three finalists after Meenagh Miracle, Meenagh Maestro and Meenagh Maverick all ran well to qualify.

ALICE HOLDS MAESTRO IN A THRILLER

The opening heat provided a thrilling finish with Peter Sutcliffe’s Amazing Alice eventually holding off the persistent challenge of Meenagh Maestro.

The race to the turn was a close affair with Amazing Alice, Meenagh Maestro and Meenagh Miracle in a line.

With a rails pitch in her favour, the Pat Guilfoyle trained Amazing Alice (Aero Majestic/ Droopys Coast) took up the running but she could never shake off Meenagh Maestro. Only a half length separated the pair as they entered the back straight although Amazing Alice increased her advantage to a length by the third turn.

Still the contest wasn’t over.

Amazing Alice just edged off the fence between the last two bends and Meenagh Maestro moved up her inner, bumping the leader in the process. There was a tremendous buckle up the straight but Amazing Alice dug in to score by a head in 33.09.

Meenagh Maestro ran a big race in defeat in second, a length and a half ahead of his litter sister Meenagh Miracle, who was always a close third. Track record holder Ripley Lad was out of luck. After taking a hefty bump on the turn he could never land a blow and eventually finished last.

ZINZAN DRIVES THE TURN

The second heat was won in more convincing fashion by Eamonn Doyle’s Monbeg Zinzan as he made a decisive move on the turn.

Meenagh Maverick led into the turn from Revilo Diva but Monbeg Zinzan drove the bend, shooting up the inside of the front pair to take up the running.

Once going to the front, the powerful son of Skywalker Luke and Blastoff Fizz quickly opened up a clear advantage and he proceeded to cruise home five and a half length clear of Meenagh Maverick in 33.04, while Glenlara Rosa ran on strongly to finish just a short head away in third.
