JOY FOUR PENNY IN CLONMEL FEATURE

JOY FOUR PENNY IN CLONMEL FEATURE

Peter Farrell

The feature race on last night’s Clonmel card was the final of the Good News/Belles Direction @ Stud 525 and there was a shock on the cards as Fourpenny Joy landed the spoils for owner, John Graham Campbell.

Indeed, Fourpenny Joy was still seeking a first career win heading into the €930 decider but after showing excellent track craft throughout, she emerged a very worthy winner for connections. In a race where the lead changed hands on numerous occasions, it was Emers Charlie who broke best of all from trap four but his search for the rails was halted by the improving Freedom Press in one, while Ballyhimikin News was also showing nice dash on the outer. Bumping ensued at the opening corner and Freedom Press was the beneficiary of a plumb draw on the fence to shoot four clear down the back straight and she was followed by the improving Ballyhimikin News, with Fourpenny Joy also creeping into contention. The race still very much up for grabs with the winning line in sight, Fourpenny Joy railed around the bottom two bends and staying out of trouble, the daughter of Sparta Maestro - Fourpenny Lake stayed on strongly to deny the favourite, Ballyhimikin News, by a length and a half. The time, given the trouble, was 29.52.

DESIRE FASTEST AGAIN

Not for the first time in recent weeks, Free From Desire posted the fastest time of the night in race four, the Sporting Press Open 525.

Jointly owned by Maria and John Kennedy, Free From Desire of course is no stranger to posting nice figures and has an exceptional 28.26 on her card at Shelbourne Park. She showed fine grit and determination last night however, as she emerged victorious after a ding dong battle with Hello Vicky. Come out on top by a neck, the daughter of Definite Opinion - Pippy stopped the clock in a very smart 28.78.

BEYONCE BACK TO WINNING WAYS

After winning four of the five rounds of the Munster Juvenile Puppy Cup at Clonmel, the exception being the final, Tullovin Beyonce got back to winning ways in fine style in race two.

It was Springfield Gold who showed first from trap five but after a poor start by her standards, Tullovin Beyonce showed a phenomenal turn of pace to the opening corner to turn the bend a close second. Running a terrific second bend, the lovely fawn soon took control and quickly developed a three length lead down the back straight. From here, it was a relatively routine night’s work for this consistent daughter of Good News - Tullovin Fire as she galloped to a three and a half length victory over Fiveoclocksomwer in second. The time was a smart 28.90. That now makes it five wins from six starts for James Sheahan’s bitch.

MINOR STARS ON DEBUT

There was a nice novice performance in race five as the Mary O’Connor owned Minor Droopy scored in comfortable fashion.

Only an August 19’ whelp, Minor Droopy took control from the offset as the daughter of Droopys Jet - Minor Racer came away well from trap two to show the superior early gears into the opening corner. Opening a healthy advantage down the back, it was curtains for her rivals as she crossed the line over three lengths too strong for nearest challenger, Share The Bloom in second. The time was 29.22.

SWIFT JET LANDS IN STYLE

The best over the sprint distance on the night was Hon The Jet as he emerged a trap to line winner for the Slye-Crew syndicate.

Hoping to make it three wins from his last five starts, Hon The Jet soon put this contest to bed as he pinged out of trap four to lead into the opening corner. Already three lengths clear rounding the turn, Hon The Jet never broke stride as he galloped frantically around the bottom corner to cross the line a length a half clear of Even Flow in second. The time was a quick 16.37.
