Patrick Guilfoyle has sent out several impressive youths in recent weeks with Magical Silas springing to mind most recently at Limerick.
The Moneygall handler seems to have a conveyor belt for producing quality greyhounds and Magical Soraya is now the latest to have recorded a memorable debut as she took her chance in the night’s opener at Galway greyhound stadium.
A December 18’ daughter of Good News - Magical Zeta, Magical Soraya had a modest qualifying campaign but the well-made 70 pounder blew her field away last night from trap five. Only a four dog affair, the Sandra Guilfoyle owned bitch was well away to quickly outpace her rivals on the run to the opening corner. It was a routine assignment thereafter as the talented black stretched her lead to come home a fifteen length winner in a flash time of 28.74. Incidentally, a sister to Magical Soraya is the unraced Magical Firebird who posted a rapid 28.97 qualifying trial at the tough Galway circuit and no doubt she is another to keep an eye on going forward.
NORMAL SERVICE RESUMED FOR RODDICK
Caislean Roddick has been in a rich vein of form since the return to racing in June and last night he duly recorded a fourth win in his last five starts to bounce back from defeat in Cork.
Running in the top race of the night in race eleven, Caislean Roddick (Droopys Roddick - Ballyregan Rach) was well into stride from trap three where the nearest challengers came in the form of both Moanduff Daisy and Headford Melody. Showing the superior back straight pace however, the Kevin Connolly owned ‘Roddick’ took control and galloped clear to win by a length and a half success. The time was a hot 28.81.
There was another professional performance in race ten from the ultra consistent Pinnacle Rio as he recorded his seventh win from eleven starts.
Owned by Michael Costello, you could set your watch by Pinnacle Rio and he was quickly into stride once again from trap one to lead early doors. Never under much threat thereafter, Exchange Snapper came through to grab second but was still some two and a quarter lengths off the pace at the winning line. A strong running performance from the son of ‘Rio Quattro - Fawn Samantha’, the time returned a fast 28.84.
PURPLE PATCH CONTINUES FOR MOUNTCASHEL
The Mountcashel kennels have been in fine form recently at Galway and the team of Martin Tucker and Stephanie O’Brien were back on the scoresheet last night again with Mountcashel Red.
A coursing bred daughter of ‘Newinn Wonder - Oakview Banba’, Mountcashel Red was a winner on debut some four weeks prior and the fawn was well away from trap four before showing some of that customary coursing early pace to take control. Tracking well around the bottom two bends, ‘Red’ stayed on stoutly up the home straight to record a two length victory as the clock returned a smart 19.16.
LANA WINS AGAIN
Bumblebee Lana has really hit top gear in recent starts and Paddy Burke’s charge produced a very nice performance to land race eight.
After landing a sprint event on her last appearance with an impressive 18.90 return, Bumblebee Lana stepped back up to the four bends and she did so in style. Fast away wearing the blue sheet, the daughter of ‘Ballymac Vic - Bumblebee Rosie’ set a fierce gallop throughout and despite the chasing hard Drumgeely Lass throwing down a challenge late on, Bumblebee Lana held firm to win by a length and a quarter. The time was a fine 29.08.
