VIDEO: 2022 Con & Annie Kirby Memorial Final

The Return of the Roar

Friday night in Limerick Greyhound Stadium was magical. For the first time since 2019, one of the biggest greyhound racing events in the world was able to welcome a full capacity crowd and boy did they turn out to witness a memorable night.

When the lids pinged for the Final, the stand was thronged and the crowd made their voices heard as a roar erupted in support of their favourite. You couldn’t help but be taken by the beauty of it – we are back!

The 2022 Con and Annie Kirby Memorial proved to be one of the very best yet and going into the Final claims could be made for all 6 of the finalists. In the end it was Swords Rex who got in front after the break and maintained a lead throughout the competition to finish 4.5lengths ahead of Magical Kuba.  His win was the first in the competition for trainer Graham Holland and the delight on Graham’s face was clear to see as he, his wife Nicky and children Rachel and Timmy all wore beaming smiles. Naturally, there was plenty of hugs and kisses for Swords Rex too, or Gilly as he is affectionately known at home.

Owner Barbara Lowndes and husband Leonard couldn’t be there on the night but we’re sure there was jubilant scenes in Swords when they learnt that they had a Kirby winner – a dream come through! While the prestige of winning such a competition is a treat in itself, the icing on the cake was the €80,000 1st place prize. With thanks to the generosity of sponsors Noreen & JP McManus, the competition for our young greyhounds is second only to the Derby in prizemoney. In fact, the prizemoney is so generous that all of the finalists went home with a healthy reward for their participation.

It’s hard to believe it was just the 9th Final in the competition’s history. The Con & Annie Kirby Memorial is the ultimate launchpad for our young greyhounds and over the last decade the greyhounds that compete in the competition have been the very best – Derby champions, Award winners, the ones who draw the crowds!

Of course, the one thing that makes the Con and Annie Kirby Memorial so magical is the participation of the local GAA Community in Limerick. Every year GAA, Camogie, Ladies Football and Handball clubs bring colour to the stadium when they turn out in their droves, young and old, to support their nominated greyhound. Each week, we are treated to great competitions and events, while friendly rivalries and banter between the clubs abound. The lucky final six clubs share in a generous prizepot of €20,000 which over the years has supported the club’s development and progression.

To everyone who played a part in the 2022 Con and Annie Kirby Memorial there is only two words to say – thank you!

Until next year…..

P.S. If you haven’t already seen the video of the roar of the crowd at trap rise then go check it – it’s something special.
